What step are you on?
Step 1: Unconcerned
You may know a great deal about Jesus and salvation, or you might know very little. The important point is, you don’t really care.
Step 2: Concerned
You’re aware of your inner and spiritual needs, and you’d like to find answers to them. Perhaps this was initiated by death, divorce, job loss, sickness, or the influence of a friend.
Step 3: Conviction
God doesn’t grade on a scale, and his goodness test requires a 100% score. If you’re on this step, you have a strong spiritual discomfort and guilt that’s showing you your sin and emptiness.
Step 4: Repentance
Repentance comes when you’ve experienced a deep change of mind and heart, and have chosen to reject and forsake all known sin and the right to run your life independently of God. In other words, you’ve turned from sin and turned to God.
Step 5:
Saving Faith
You’ve made a total commitment to the rule of the Lord Jesus Christ. You’ve confessed your sin, repented from it, and placed faith in Jesus Christ. You’ve been restored to a right relationship with God through Jesus’ death and resurrection.
New life in Jesus Christ produces these changes:
A desire to know the Bible
“Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation . . .” — 1 Peter 2:2
A desire to obey Jesus
“If you love me, you will obey what I command.” — John 14:15
Distress over sin
“Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.” — 2 Timothy 2:19
Concern for the lost
“He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” — 2 Peter 3:9
